Moved Laundry to Office to free MUD Room

Some things are much better explained with pictures. We added the home office option, because we wanted to get an office in the dead space in the garage, and a wider laundry/mud room.. But lately we have been thinking of turning the living room into an office like Roger and Donna did..

Our crazy twist on it is moving the laundry into the office space, and freeing the MUD room for, mud.. SR thinks this is unthinkable.. wife thinks laundry in office is crazy. husband thinks "forget about the office, just make it laundry".. everyone is confused.

We considered the extended laundry option, but basically wanted the extra space we get with the office addition (which I consider we got as a freebie). Each of washer and dryer are 27 inches wide and 55 inches high and 51 inches deep. Laundry tub is about 24 inches wide.

1. This change below IS APPROVED by RH after they checked higher up.
This zero cost change frees up the mud room by placing the laundry hookups on the other side of the wall. The office will become a laundry room. We will tile it on day 1.

 2. Below is the standard Home Office and Laundry/Mud room combo

3. Finally, below are two alternate versions of Extended MUD.
These are our humble artist's rendering for the best use of the space.
RH refused to do this. RH  will not mount laundry hookups on window wall or garage wall
, and won't move walls or doors. These designs are things we can do later. But we wish the plumbing can be done now. The appliances (55 inches high) will block window as it is rather low.

  1. Hi guys...what about the extended laundry room option...it puts the laundry room where your office would be and adds a window back there...they give you a door between the laundry and mud room..but its a little more narrow then if you made your office into laundry room...we looked into it , but needed the garage space instead. We did flip where our washer and dryer goes though...we put the hook ups on the back wall instead of their plans on the side wall..so when you walk into the laundry room from the kitchen , you are looking head on at the washer and dryer...we are ordering cabinets from lowes which basically wrap the washer and dryer so they almost look built in...just an idea! So much easier seeing it than imagining..we saw a model which had the extended laundry rm option and with the window it was great

    1. Everyday I realize we seem to be thinking along the same lines in the way we design our homes (your check list and options are very close to ours). The extended laundry is exactly what we wanted, but we wanted to put the appliances against the far wall like you did to maximize space.. So we went with the home office to be able to do that in the future, but this moves restricted us to a much smaller laundry room. It is interesting that they let you place the appliances by the window. In preconstruction meeting they told us the window wall was too thin and would need extra insulation and the wall needs to be made thicker.. Can you post a picture of your laundry room setup, we would love to see how it looks finished to allow us to make a better decision on ow to proceed.

  2. The home office/Laundry might work because you can always put a TV and small couch or something, then it can be used for a game room for the kids and a great place to sit a do laundry.

    1. Thank you and you are very right. This is what we are thinking, because it would always be nice to have a true dedicated laundry room. It will be wide enough and spacey enough to allow for other uses.. It can serve as extra storage or pantry space since these houses have lots of rooms but little storage other than basement.

  3. One of my gripes is that Ryan did not have homes available with a real mudroom. With all the sports equipment, school stuff, etc., I would have really liked a better area to store all of it. We are looking at some ways to solve this problem. If you can do it, I love the idea of the mudroom. We had a house with a 10x12 mudroom with a laundry closet. It was the best setup. I hope you are able to configure this space the way you would like.

    1. You are so right about needing a large mud room. RH standard offerings don't really allow for that. We hoped to achieve the extended mud picture we proposed by adding the office. But RH came back with a very firm "we are not custom builders" and refused to shift the wall between laundry/mud and office to create that large mud room we envision. It would be around 12x8 which would work great for our needs.. lots of kids here..It is something we are definitely considering down the road and that's why we did the office, to make the space wider (guessing about 3 feet wider x 19), not because we really wanted an office. Shifting the interior wall and removing the wall to the family room are both very simply changes afterwards. We just don't want to deal with running new plumbing.. But since the basement is unfinished, it is very doable.

  4. Do you all have a basement? I opted to use my laundry room upstairs as my lady lair and put the laundry downstairs in the basement. If you are considering turning your living room into a office you can extend the mud room and place the laundry room downstairs this way each area would be housed separately giving you much more space (larger office, larger mud from and larger laundry room with laundry system).

    1. Laundry Rrom : in basement with full laundry room system

Living Room: Converted to Office possibly with French doors

Mud Room: extended to the end of garage

    2. You know, this basement laundry is such a brilliant thought that we never considered until read your suggestion. So we asked about it in preconstruction meeting. They will look into it and get back to us. We are totally hoping to turn the living room into an office at some point in the future (fully inspired by what Roger and Donna did. It looks amazing. It is funny how you never consider something until someone tells you about it, or shows a picture of it done!
